Introduction

Welcome to Klockworks, a collection of my writings as a journalist and author.

Confessions of an Eco-Shopper is a companion blog to my book, Confessions of an Eco-Shopper: the true story of one woman's mission to go green, published by Hodder. The purpose of the blog is to keep you abreast of any updates to the content of the book, as well as allowing me to comment on current environmental stories. If you'd like to get in touch with me about the book or the blog, email me at kate@ecosmartshopper.co.uk

The Press Column contains my weekly columns for The Press newspaper in York from 2006-2007.

Dangerous Love contains interviews about my true-life/crime memoir published by Ebury in 2005.

Reviews is a collection of various theatre and music reviews that I've done for The Press and BBC North Yorkshire

More information about Dangerous Love and my other published works can be found on the Klockworks Website.

A quartet of swaying animatronic penguins in Coppergate, a giant conical Christmas tree atop the fountain in Parliament Street, ruddy-faced traders in Dickensian dress . . . no sooner has the last, post-Bonfire Night firework exploded (at midnight, with a crack like a gunshot, making me and half the neighbours twitch our bedroom curtains nervously) than York has segued seamlessly into Christmas.   more »
View Article  What a rubbish life I lead
'That was a rubbish party,' a friend said, as she took her leave of a soiree I threw recently. 'Thank you,' I replied, because it's the kind of compliment an eco-hostess likes to get when she's been promoting pencil cases that started life as car tyres and ice scrapers made from plastic cups, not to mention notebooks that used to be juice cartons and computer printers revived as rulers.   more »

Dear S D Heyman. Thank you for your email. It is always great to get feedback on the column and I am keen to generate debate. I do, as a matter of fact, shop at Alligator from time to time, even though it's a bit out of my way. And I do make very good use of my local shops   more »

My friend Pauline has an apple on her desk at work. It's been sitting there, in a warm office, for four weeks now, shiny and unblemished. Despite its lustre, she doesn't fancy eating it. 'What chemicals must it have been sprayed with for it to stay perfect for so long?' she asked.   more »
View Article  Mad as the moon
'I am not talking to you for the next three days,' the husband announced tersely, 'because there is a full moon.' This is not because I metamorphose, Professor Lupin-like, into a werewolf. The fact that I replied in a volley of fiercesome snarls was purely because the 'You're not in your right mind, dear' approach tends to get my hackles up.   more »
View Article  Is pole dancing ever the answer?
My friend Pauline has just left a message on our phone. 'Did you see that letter in The Press?' she fumed. 'I'm absolutely incensed.' I guessed it wasn't the correspondence on slow drivers or school dinners that had made her so irate, and I was right. David from Huntingdon's hurrah for lap dancing had really got her goat.   more »
